Dream 2010: When our students and faculty members are second to none in intelligence, every student, who graduates from GTU, should be as good as a similar student from any University of the world. Every GTU graduate should be employable and GTU’s graduates should be able to help build a prosperous Gujarat, a great country and a better world.

Today GTU has about 400,000 students studying in its various programs. During the next decade, as India moves towards becoming the youngest major country of the world, GTU will have to shoulder progressively higher responsibility. During the few valuable years that a young person is at GTU, the  faculty and the environment at GTU must help him/ her transform himself/ herself into both a top-class technologist as well as a first-rate human being so that he/ she becomes an agent of change for the better.

I have spent almost five decades in education, teaching and transforming young minds both in Gujarat and abroad. I have known the tremendous power that today’s young minds have to create new ideas to solve the problems faced by the society. These students and faculties are our hope for the future and given a chance they can transform the world.

  • Our Universities struggle to provide practice-oriented learning.  GTU has taken many steps1, which are harbingers of hope:
    • As the first cohort of 4-year degree engineering students completed their Final Year projects in May 2012, 1,900 industries said that they had benefited from our young students’ work.
    • There is a perceptible change in the society’s perception about innovation. This is reflected in the media, which has reported about student-led innovations in more than 100 articles in the print-media2.
  • Our faculty consists of young, enthusiastic but inexperienced persons: GTU has set up the largest Faculty Development program in the country since empowering the faculty will create a long-lasting impact. At nearly every week-end, GTU organizes FDPs at various places in Gujarat.
  • Every graduate of GTU, who wants to have a job, should be able to get one. This requires both excellent training and a continuous relationship and inter-action with HR offices of industries and businesses. For the later, every institute/ College is supposed to have both a Training and Placement Office (TPO) and an active UDISHA (Universal Development of Integrated Skills through Higher Education) club. GTU has information about 300 such Clubs in GTU. To coordinate the work of the TPOs and UDISHA clubs and to empower them,  GTU has established  I-TAP (Integrated Training & Placement  Cell) .
  • Universities today not only need to create skilled students who seek jobs but also those who can create jobs. Innovation driven entrepreneurship can create a large numbers of jobs that can engage the young India. Student Start up Support System (S4) is being setup by GTU to nurture students who wish to pursue their own dreams of creating enterprises and create jobs
  • Man-making education: Contributor Personality Development program:  Such an effort has never before been made by any University. About 1,10,000 students would have gone through this program during 2012. To conduct this program well, a continuing series of Workshops to build the capacities of faculty members have been organized since Nov-Dec 2011. More than 1000 faculty members have participated in these workshops.
  • Through first of its kind effort in any technical university of our scale, 2000 professors in 25 Innovation Sankuls have been trained in Intellectual Property Rights and Patenting.  During three months after completion of the Final Year projects in May-June 2012, it is reported that more than 100 patents have been filed.   • During this academic year, the faculty members, who have been trained in workshops  in patent search, will encourage the students to search for patents in their chosen area of work so that the Final Year projects may become even more innovative during this year.
  • Our Universities are based on the structure devised by East India Company during the middle of the nineteenth century. To develop structures, which can cope with the challenges of the 21st century, an innovative  research project on “Designing the Structure of Technical Universities” has been taken up. It has been called a historic step by Padmabhusan Dr. P.V. Indiresan, who retired as Director –IIT Madras. The new University structures should help create world class technological universities in India.
  • Soft Skills: in every program, there are courses on communication and English language. The Colleges are encouraged to have active Language Laboratories. At MBA, a 9-credit Finishing School module has been added. Even before GTU is able to acquire facilities and staff positions for Sports and other extra-curricular activities, it has started annual youth festival (called Kshitij) and Sports festival, making it possible for students from all its 500 Colleges/ Institutions to participate. GTU teams participate actively and win awards in AIU Sports and Cultural activities. GTU also provides  special facilities for NCC  and NSS training.


1Practice Orientation:

  • From the first semester of the academic year 2010-11, GTU changed the scheme in every course, with practical work to 70 (end-sem exam) + 30 (continuous evaluation) + 50 (practical work), thus raising the marks for practical work from 10 to 50.
  • GTU set up the GTU Innovation Council on 2nd Aug 2010. Then it established 25 GTU Innovation Sankuls to bring Directors/ Principals and industry leaders on the same platform. In the summer of 2011, 50,000 Pre-Final year students of Engineering went on Shodh Yatras to SMEs to search for the definition of a Final Year project, which would improve a product or a process in the industry. 17,000 projects were taken up and completed from August 2011 to May 2012.
  • GTU’s Deans are visiting every College to impress upon the management the importance of practical work in the laboratories and workshops.
